How To Remove Pet Stains/Odors (Dog/Cat Urine & Poop Stains & Smell)

Pet Stains & Odor ControlWhen we conducted our research on how to extract  and prevent Pet Stains, we examined the issue from a number of angles to get a better understanding and create the best solution.

Understandably, Pet Stains occur as a form of domination (marking their territory) and they will continue to do so as long as they can smell any form of scent of their original marking or another pets marking. In order to remove and prevent your pet from marking its territory there are five (5) steps that need to be taken.

How to remove pet stains and smell from your rug:

Pet Stains & Odor ControlStep 1 – We make a big pool/bath where we soak the rug for 24 hours with the rug facing down. The reason we set the rug face down is to prevent any bleeding from the rug or if the rug does bleed this will prevent it from spreading to other areas on the rug; this is also the best way to extract the pet stains.

Step 2 – In the morning we drain the makeshift pool/bath and give the rug a regular wash followed by going into the drying room where it will stay for 6 hours.

Pet Stains & Odor ControlStep 3 – Once the rug is completely dry, we examine the rug to ensure all pet stains and smells have been removed. If we feel our standard pet stain removal procedure was not successful, we then take the following extra steps:

•    We spray enzyme on the rug, which is a detergent that kills the bacteria within the pet stain and let it sit for 48 hours.

•    Then the original rug cleaning process is repeated – soaking for 24 hours face down, regular wash and placed in the drying room for 6 hours.

This usually gets all the pet stains and smell out once and for all. Sometimes we use the sun to dry the rug, which believe it or not assists with removing certain levels of pet stains.

Pet Stains & Odor ControlStep 4 – Due to the acid and bacteria in pet stains, it may cause discoloration on the rug, if this occurs, the rug goes through our Color Restoration Process. Our restoration department uses techniques that include the use of bleach to properly prepare the discolored section of the rug and then manually apply color corrections by painting it using the details and design from the rest of the rug. Once the process is complete, your rug appears to be and smells brand new!

Step 5 – Preventing Pet Stains. During our research, we came across a trick that seems to be extremely helpful. In order to prevent your pet from marking its territory on your rug, the pet has to lose interest in doing so. Using a non toxic, organic spice such as white pepper or black pepper seems to be very helpful because pets dislike the smell. If you sprinkle some on your rug it will assist with preventing the pet from wanting to mark its territory. Of course applying this trick doesn’t help if the rug isn’t thoroughly cleaned. It is strongly suggested to have your rug cleaned first then apply this trick. Sprinkle the pepper lightly onto the rug for about a month or so and your pet will eventually lose interest in trying to mark their territory on the rug so long as he/she is not a stubborn pet. If the rug is light colored it is best to use white pepper if the rug is dark colored use black pepper.
